When designing iYardage, John and I went back-and-forth on this one for a while. In the end, we decided to keep iYardage as an interactive yardage book - just like the yardage books pros use when playing tournaments.
We like how the technique of "dragging the ball to the desired location" forces us to play TARGET GOLF - focusing on the exact spot we're going to hit the ball.
The iYardage interface also allows users to be more precise in their distance calculations, since the iPhone GPS can be off from 5-10 yards. That's accurate enough to find a nearby restaurant - for golf, not so much!
Plus, we dig the throwback quality of the interface which reminds us of the old "Celebrity Golf" episodes.
Tournaments are 1 round events, while Leagues are meant for multiple rounds.
Tournament winners are decided by the lowest score in stroke-play (either Gross or Net
Handicap Adjusted scores).
Leagues have points allocated based on different achievements, like Birdies, Eagles, GIR, Fairways Hit, etc. Leagues also have special awards
based on these achievements.
The Competition times are all in HST (Hawaii Standard Time) which is UTC -10. This is because Hawaii is right on the International Date line, and gives all of our users
worldwide a chance to get their Golfrounds uploaded.
Plus, Hawaii is a nice place!
The formula we are using is
(No. of Up & Downs + No. of Sand Saves) / No. of Holes Par or Better with no GIR
Be sure to track your stats to get an accurate percentage!
Hold the pin down for 1 second. The pin will expand to signal it's ready to drag. Release the pin in the desired position, and all yardages update automatically!
Since tee boxes change all the time, iYardage has a way for the user to adjust them. From a new hole, simply subtract a shot from the counter, and you will be in tee edit mode. Touch the teebox, and drag it around until you find the desired position. Increment the shot counter to set the teebox. Once again, all yardages are updated automatically.
The maximum number of putts that can be entered on the scorecard is 5. Once you add a putt to the max, the counter cycles back to 0.
Double-tap anywhere on the screen to hide the bullseye - double-tap again to display them again. This works in the overview mode, or the green-zoom mode.
From the Main Menu, go to "Edit/View Played Round." Use the iPhone standard swipe gesture on the round you would like to delete - a DELETE button will appear.
